Beef Sustainability – Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Impacts

Sustainability is the essence to efficiency. A key concept of sustainability is managing any operational task while striving toward continuous improvement. Here at NA Timmerman, day in and day out, we actively seek innovative improvements to our operating methods. We take our responsibility of managing our resources thoughtfully and proactively with the knowledge that they can be safeguarded and effectively managed not only today, but for future generations. Animal health and welfare, the health and safety of our employees and environmental stewardship are the pillars and remain in constant focus of sustainability for NA Timmerman. In all that we do, we dedicate ourselves to doing the right things for the animals, employees and natural resources that are in our care.

ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Wastewater Management – we utilize the affluent water from our holding ponds to irrigate forage crops we grow to provide roughage for our cattle.
  • Manure Management – manure is a more economic, sustainable and readily available sourced fertilizer for local farmers.
  • Cattle are the ULTIMATE upcyclers – 90% of their diet is undigestible by humans. Cattle not only utilize it, but convert it into a nutritious protein that humans can utilize.

SOCIAL
Providing the absolute best for our employees and the cattle we care for:
  • Our employees are our biggest asset – one our most valued natural resources.
  • We support the communities we live and work in.
  • BQA training (Beef Quality Assurance)
  • Safety training
  • Company best practices
  • We work with a consulting nutritionist to provide our cattle with the best -balanced diet to maximize performance.
  • Our consulting vet group is a science driven group that offers a competitive advantage through strategic planning and access to a global database of industry data which is used to facilitate cutting edge care and research on animal health protocols. That includes training in stockmanship, animal welfare,  education of animal health teams and outstanding care of our cattle.

ECONOMIC
  • The rations our cattle consume include byproducts and co-products from the ethanol and biofuel industry.
  • Cattle produce more than meat – greater than 44% of an animals live weight transforms into other goods, such as, leather, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and pet food.
  • Ecosystem improvement – properly managed water usage, crop management and cattle grazing can improve rangeland and wildlife habitats. As the global population continues to grow, ruminant animals like beef cattle can aide in producing more consumable protein.
  • Cattle grazing improves grassland soil health, carbon storage and actively aides in the mitigation of catastrophic wildfires.
